Getting Your Custom T-Shirt Design Right the First Time
There's nothing more exciting than holding a finished custom shirt in your hands — and nothing more frustrating than a design that didn't turn out the way you imagined. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Follow these tips and your custom shirts from Ivypress Designs will look exactly as you envisioned.
Start With the Right File Format
The quality of your print starts with the quality of your artwork. Here's what works best:
- PNG with transparent background — Best for logos and graphics. Transparent backgrounds prevent unwanted white boxes around your design.
- SVG or vector files — Ideal for logos and text. Vectors scale infinitely without losing quality.
- High-resolution JPG (300 DPI+) — Acceptable for photos and detailed artwork, but make sure the resolution is high enough.
What to avoid: Low-resolution screenshots, images pulled from websites (typically 72 DPI), or pixelated files. If your design looks blurry on your computer screen, it will look blurry on the shirt.
Choose Colors Intentionally
Color affects everything — the mood of the design, the readability of text, and how well the finished shirt photographs. A few principles to keep in mind:
Contrast Is Everything
Dark designs pop on light shirts. Light designs pop on dark shirts. Avoid low-contrast combinations like yellow text on a white shirt or dark navy on black — they'll be hard to read from a distance.
Limit Your Palette
The most effective t-shirt designs use 1–3 colors. More colors add complexity and can make a design look busy. If your logo uses many colors, consider a simplified version for apparel.
Test on Similar Shirt Colors
If possible, mock up your design on a digital image of the shirt color you're ordering. What looks great on white may not translate to forest green or navy.
Think About Placement
Where your design sits on the shirt is just as important as the design itself. The most common placements:
- Left chest — Classic and professional. Great for logos and small designs (roughly 4" x 4").
- Full front center — Maximum impact for large designs, slogans, and graphics. Typically 10–12" wide.
- Back — Great for event details, rosters, and secondary messaging.
- Sleeve — A stylish accent placement for small logos or dates.
When in doubt, front center is the safest choice — it's visible, balanced, and works with almost any design.
Simplify for Small Sizes
Fine details that look great at 100% zoom on your screen may disappear when printed at 4 inches wide. As a general rule:
- Avoid text smaller than 14pt in your final print size
- Keep thin lines at least 1pt thick
- Simplify highly detailed illustrations when printing small
If you're unsure, our team can review your file and flag any potential issues before we print.
Understand DTF Printing Advantages
At Ivypress Designs, we use Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing — the most advanced printing method available for custom apparel. Here's why it matters for your design:
- Full color with no limits — Photos, gradients, watercolors, complex graphics — DTF handles them all without extra cost
- No color separations — Unlike screen printing, there's no per-color charge. A 10-color design costs the same as a 1-color design
- Works on any fabric color — DTF prints vibrant colors on dark shirts without needing a white underbase adjustment
- Durable and washable — DTF transfers are rated for 50+ washes when properly cared for
Get a Proof Before You Print
For any order with custom artwork, request a digital proof before production begins. A proof shows exactly how your design will look on the shirt — size, placement, and colors. At Ivypress Designs, we provide proofs on all custom orders so you can approve before we print a single shirt.
